Gynecology Research at Magee-Womens Research Institute
Gynecology research focuses on women’s health from the reproductive age to the mature woman. MWRI is one of the few research institutes in the country with a dedicated center for family planning research, where family planning and the development of new contraceptive methods are studied. These studies also target the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, especially HIV. Research is also intended to impact the use and availability of contraceptives in developing countries. A key area of basic, translational, and clinical research defines mechanisms that lead to pelvic floor dysfunction, tests synthetic meshes used for pelvic color surgery, and assesses means to prevent pelvic floor injury. Studies are designed to shed light on treatments and quality of life for women who suffer from pelvic floor disorders, and the long-term outcomes of commonly utilized interventions to correct urge and stress urinary incontinence.
