Welcome to the City of Bridges
Founded in 1758, Pittsburgh became the leader in the steel, iron, aluminum, and glass industries. The steel industry no longer exists in Pittsburgh, which is now known for advanced technologies in other fields such as information technology, biomedical sciences, energy, business services, and higher education. Pittsburgh is home to research powerhouses such as The University of Pittsburgh, The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Carnegie Mellon University, and Magee-Womens Research Institute, to name a few.
There are currently about 335,000 people residing in this diverse city, with 1.3 million residing in the ever-growing Allegheny County. The southwest corner of Pittsburgh is where three rivers — the Allegheny, the Monongahela, and the Ohio — meet to add a unique element to the city’s distinctive skyline.
Pittsburgh has been repeatedly selected as America’s most livable city by Forbes magazine and other organizations.
Some famous Pittsburghers include: Fred Rogers, Joe Montana, Christina Aguilera, Gene Kelly, Rachel Carson, and Andy Warhol. These citizens and many others have made Pittsburgh proud.
Pittsburgh has the most bridges of any city in the world, totaling more than 200!
